A bigger Sanctuary, a proper training yard
- The courtyard is bigger: 49 m across instead of 34, about twice the floor.
- How things moved: holds the size and moves the old layout out in two zones.
- The middle (the fire, the plinth, the board, the chessboard, the dummy and the butt) spreads by ×1.625, so there's real room between things.
- The ring along the walls moves out with the walls and keeps its distance to them, so stalls, niches, banners and sconces stay flush.
- Things that belong together (benches round the fire, candles at the mourners' feet) move as one.
- The buildings: the casino and the Ivory Pocket are built where they always were and slide out with their walls. They also slide along them, so their doors keep their place in the layout: the casino's door is at x 11.7 on the south wall, the Ivory Pocket's at z 19.5 on the east wall.
- Rebuilt to fit:
- the level itself;
- the battlements;
- the wall dressing (buttresses, plinths, sconces, towers on the new corners);
- longer lantern strings;
- the flagstone paths, which now also run out to the casino, the Ivory Pocket and the training gate;
- the grass;
- the drifting motes;
- the view outside (the apron, the crag, the forest and the track start from the new walls).
- New in the open ground: lantern posts halfway along the paths (lit, and kept clear of the dummy, the butt, the board and the archery lane), and three raised stone planters, each with a gnarled autumn oak, its leaves on the flagstones and benches round it.
- The training dummy, rebuilt:
- A straw-stuffed burlap torso with no legs, sat on a squared, iron-banded post. Its arms are roped out along the crossbar and straw spills from the bottom.
- A sack head with stitched cross eyes and mouth, a rope cinched at the neck, and a dented, riveted kettle helm.
- The post stands in a cross-footed base with braces and sandbags. A rack of wooden practice swords and a spear sits beside it, and its tally is chalked on a slate on an easel.
- It still takes every hit, sways, staggers and keeps the tally.
- The archery butt, rebuilt:
- A thick coiled-straw boss with a rounded rim, coils standing proud, cord bindings over the edge, stray stalks, and two old arrows left in the straw.
- It leans back on a timber easel: splayed front legs, a back prop, a ledge and pegs, lashed at the head. It still scores in the plane of its face.
- Beside it: a slate scoreboard on an easel, a corded straw bale, and a barrel stood full of arrows.
- The shooting mark is now 11 m off (was 9).
