What we collect

If you sign up to be notified, we store your email address, the date you signed up, the date you confirmed, the name of the site or campaign that brought you here (such as "reddit"), which of our emails were sent to you and, if you leave, the date you unsubscribed. We may add a short note, such as where we met you. That's all. We email you once to confirm the address is yours, and you're only added to the list when you press the button in that email.

Visit counts (no cookies)

The site counts its own visits so we can see which pages are read: for each day, how many times each page was viewed, which sites linked here, any campaign tag in the link (?utm_source=) and whether the device was a computer, phone or tablet. To count visitors rather than page views without a cookie, the server makes a one-way code from your connection's address and your browser's name, using a key that changes every day; the code is only used to tell whether this device has been counted today, and it's deleted after two days. Your IP address and browser details themselves are never stored, and nothing is stored on your device. Search engines and other bots aren't counted.

In our emails, each link goes through our own site first so we can count how many times it was followed. We count clicks per link only, never who clicked.

Analytics and cookies

Only if you press Accept on the cookie banner, we use Google Analytics to count visits: which pages are read, roughly where visitors come from (country and city), the device and browser, and a few actions such as pressing the Wishlist or Discord buttons, signing up or searching the wiki. Until you accept, nothing from Google loads and no cookies are set. If you say no, that's remembered and nothing is loaded.

Google Analytics sets these cookies on this site when you accept:

Your choice is stored in your browser's local storage (vael-consent), not in a cookie. We don't use advertising features, Google signals or ad personalisation, and IP addresses are not stored by Google Analytics 4. Google processes the data under its data processing terms; data may be processed outside the UK under Google's safeguards. Our lawful basis is your consent, under UK GDPR and PECR.

Why

To email you about VAEL playtests and release news. Our lawful basis under UK GDPR is your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.

Where it's kept

On our own server in a private database. We don't sell or share it. Our emails are handed to an email delivery service (an SMTP provider), which processes your address only to deliver them.

How long

Until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove it. If you never press the confirmation button, your address is deleted automatically 30 days after we asked.

Your rights

You can ask to see, correct or delete your data. Every email we send has a one-click unsubscribe link, and email apps that show their own Unsubscribe button (Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail) work too. When you unsubscribe we keep only your address and the date you left, so you're never emailed again; ask and we'll delete that too. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
