Weather over the forest and the ruins
- Weather. Only the two open depths get it: the Cursed Forest and the Hollow Ruins. Never underground, never in the Sanctuary.
- Each depth rolls its own weather per run, from the world seed, so everyone in a party sees the same sky.
- Most runs (about 60%) keep the usual still night. The rest:
- Rain:
- A drifting cloud deck covers the stars and the moon, lit at its edges where the moon shows through. The moonlight dims and the fog thickens.
- Rain streaks down around you, slanted by the run's wind, and splashes where it lands.
- On medium and high it stops at roofs and under thick canopy.
- Everything turns darker and glossy, and puddles shine in the hollows.
- Lightning flashes now and then: the clouds light up, and the land flashes twice. Thunder follows, near or far.
- Snow:
- Soft flakes drift down through a pale overcast.
- Snow settles on what faces up: the ground, flagstones and stones, the grass and the tops of the trees.
- A cold wind blows.
- Blood Moon: a huge red moon (its grinning face's eyes gone gold) in a sky the colour of a wound. Red moonlight, red fog.
- Blood Rain:
- The blood moon, half behind cloud, and it rains blood: dark red streaks, red splashes.
- The ground is stained and slick, and the lightning is red.
- Thunder follows it too.
- A line on screen announces the weather when it changes.
- How it stays cheap:
- Precipitation: one GPU particle system around the camera, plus one for splashes.
- It's sized by the quality preset: none on potato, about half on low.
- Collisions and splashes only on medium and up, and not on the Compatibility renderer, which doesn't collide GPU particles.
- Collisions use one small heightfield that follows the camera and re-renders only when it moves.
- Wet and snowy ground: three shader globals, read by the surface, grass and leaf shaders. A few lines each, skipped entirely when dry.
- Clouds: part of the night sky shader, cheaper on the lite presets.
- When it's clear: nothing runs.
- Console:
- It works alongside
time: rain at dusk, snow at noon.
- It works alongside
- New screenshot mode
weather: the forest under each kind, wide and up at the sky, then the ruins in rain, snow and blood rain.
